Hummingbirds

Hummingbirds are Western Hemisphere only, the tiniest birds, with an ability to hover and even fly backwards. Despite their size, with the right camera gear, they are not difficult to photograph. Western Washington has just two reliable species, Anna’s and Rufous. Recently many Anna’s stay all year, surviving on frequent visits to hummingbird feeders, sapsucker well and winter flowers. Rufous has always been a long distance migrant. I’ve seen them in winter, but, as they say, the Rufous returns with the blossoming of the Salmonberry.
